07 Blue Otaru

The azure stage that has nurtured life since ancient times and continues to bring blessings even now.

The sea of Otaru is beautiful. Located at the base of the Shakotan Peninsula, which juts out into the Sea of Japan, Otaru Port is a natural harbor surrounded by mountains on three sides, with a coastline that follows a crescent shape. From the top of Mt. Tengu, you can see the city of Otaru, with the port at its center. In addition, the coastline to the west of Shukutsu, where the Otaru Aquarium is located, is the only Marine Park District in Hokkaido. It has been designated as a national park, and the beautiful sea and the strange-looking rocks and stones create a spectacular view.

The beautiful sea is a fishing ground, and a rich variety of seafood such as sea urchin, rockfish and scallops are landed in the four seasons. One of the charms of Otaru is that you can enjoy fresh local fish, as the fishing grounds, markets, retail stores and restaurants are all close together. You can fully enjoy the fresh taste of the fish, not only in sushi and seafood bowls, but also in izakaya pubs.

You also shouldn't miss the activities that take place on the sea. You can enjoy the “blue Otaru” to the full extent on a cave cruise, and leisure activities at Otaru Port Marina, and recently, marine sports such as sea kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding have also become popular. In addition, sightseeing cruise ships and yakatabune (houseboats) operate from Otaru Port, so you can enjoy the Otaru cityscape from the sea.

Otaru, which is full of seasonal ingredients and activities, is also home to Asarigawa Onsen, the only hot spring resort in Otaru, which is about 30 minutes by bus from the city center. A hot spring after a day of fun is something special.
